Located in the scenic Callejón de Huaylas, Caraz is a paradise for mountaineers and hikers. The city is significantly lower and warmer than neighboring Huaraz, making it a pleasant base camp. Expeditions to Nevado Alpamayo, often called one of the most beautiful mountains in the world, and to the wide-open Laguna Parón start from here. This deep blue glacial lake is surrounded by snow-capped peaks and has some of the most spectacular landscapes in all of Peru. Inside the city, there is a relaxed atmosphere. The Plaza de Armas is lined with palm trees and provides a direct view of the mighty Huandoy. Caraz earned its nickname "Dulzura" (Sweetness) as the city is famous for its production of Manjar Blanco (Peruvian dulce de leche), honey, and various fruit pastes. A visit to the local market is a must to taste these delicacies fresh and to experience the authentic life of the Andean people. For culture enthusiasts, the nearby archaeological site of Tumshukaiko features insights into the region's 3,000-year history. Those who prefer a quieter pace can hike through the surrounding fields where carnations and other flowers are grown for export. The journey from Lima takes about 8 to 10 hours by bus, or about 1.5 hours from Huaraz. The best time to visit is from May to September, the so-called "Andean summer," when the sky is mostly cloudless and the mountain views are at their best. During Holy Week and the city festival in January, Caraz shows its most colorful side with traditional dances and religious processions. It is the handy place for travelers who want to experience the Cordillera Blanca authentically and a bit less touristy than in Huaraz.
