Chimbote is the largest city in the Ancash Region and is situated on Peru's Pacific coast within Ferrol Bay. Originally a small fishing village, the city experienced explosive growth in the mid-20th century due to the boom in the fishmeal industry. During the 1960s and 1970s, Chimbote was considered the primary fishing port in the world, particularly for anchovy harvesting. Geographically, the bay is protected by the El Ferrol Peninsula and the offshore Blanca and Ferrol islands, making it a well-suited natural harbor. Beyond fishing, the city is a significant center for the Peruvian steel industry, hosting the Siderperu plant. Despite its industrial focus, the surrounding area provides ecological attractions such as the Villa María wetlands. The city serves as a strategic transportation hub on the Panamericana Norte highway, connecting the coast with the Andean hinterland.
