Mbaracayú Forest Nature Reserve (Paraguay)

Weather…

The Mbaracayú Forest Nature Reserve is located in the Canindeyú Department of northeastern Paraguay and is one of the country's most significant biosphere reserves. Spanning over 64,400 hectares, it protects one of the best-preserved sections of the Paraguayan Atlantic Forest. The reserve was established in 1991 through an international agreement and is managed by the Moisés Bertoni Foundation, which focuses on sustainable development. The region hosts extraordinary biodiversity, including over 400 bird species and rare mammals such as the jaguar and the giant river otter. A unique feature is the presence of the indigenous Aché community, who have retained the right to hunt within the area using their traditional methods. The landscape is characterized by dense forests, rivers, and the namesake Mbaracayú Mountains, which form a natural barrier. This protected area serves as an international model for combining nature conservation, scientific research, and the involvement of local communities.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Journeying here is typically done via Villa Ygatimí; for the final unpaved kilometers leading directly to the reserve, a sturdy four-wheel-drive vehicle is highly recommended.
📅
Best season
The cooler months from April to September provide the most favorable conditions, as the summer heat and intense humidity make long jungle hikes exceptionally exhausting and uncomfortable.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The protected area encompasses dense, hilly Atlantic rainforest alongside wetlands; the natural unpaved trails can become incredibly muddy and dangerously slippery following heavy rainfall.
🎒
What to bring
Lightweight, long-sleeved clothing to protect against insects and sun, fully waterproof footwear, and high-quality binoculars for observing the rich birdlife are absolutely essential here.
🅿️
Parking
Secure parking facilities are generally available directly at the main biological research station and the adjacent visitor center, which serve as the primary starting points for tours.
⚠️
Safety
Watch carefully for venomous snakes and spiders on the paths; hiring a local guide is highly advisable for deeper forest excursions, along with maintaining constant and adequate hydration.
⏱️
Time needed
To properly experience the immense biological diversity, one should ideally plan for one to two full days, perfectly combined with an overnight stay in the rustic on-site forest lodge.
