Aquidabán River (Paraguay)

Weather…

The Aquidabán River is one of the most important waterways in northeastern Paraguay, flowing through the Amambay Department toward the west to join the Paraguay River. Stretching approximately 250 kilometers, the river is known for its winding course and the dense gallery forests that line its banks. Geographically, it serves as a vital lifeline for agriculture and cattle ranching in the Concepción region. The Aquidabán is especially famous for its historical connection to the end of the War of the Triple Alliance, as the decisive Battle of Cerro Corá in March 1870 took place in close proximity to its shores. The flora along the river is characterized by tall palms and vines, while the fauna includes species such as capybaras and caimans. Although surrounding areas are extensively farmed, the section of the river passing through the Cerro Corá National Park maintains its wild and original character. Today, it is a favored site for nature enthusiasts and history buffs alike.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Access points in the Concepción Department are typically reached via unpaved secondary roads that branch off directly from the main highways, leading straight to the historical river sections.
📅
Best season
The timeframe from April to September is highly recommended for visits; during this period, the river experiences less flooding and the climate is far more pleasant for extensive shore explorations.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The varied topography is characterized by gentle hills, vast historical plains, and partially forested riverbanks, which can rapidly become soft and heavily muddied immediately following sudden rain showers.
🎒
What to bring
Comfortable hiking shoes, lightweight long-sleeved clothing for reliable insect protection, a wide hat against the blazing sun, and a good camera for capturing the historical sites are highly appropriate here.
🅿️
Parking
The car can mostly be parked informally directly near the historical battle memorials, adjacent to traditional rural farms, or quite simply right at the small, sturdy local bridge crossings over the water.
⚠️
Safety
Extreme caution is absolutely required at the river edges, as the muddy soils are incredibly slippery and the river hides unexpected depths; practical warnings from friendly locals must always be closely heeded.
⏱️
Time needed
Visitors generally spend roughly two to four full hours on site to comfortably stroll right along the scenic riverbanks and thoroughly inspect the nearby historically significant battle monuments in well-suited peace.
