💡 Tips
- The best way to grasp the sheer scale of the fjord is by taking a ferry or sightseeing boat from Stavanger or Lauvvik.
- If driving to Lysebotn, prepare for 27 hairpin bends; this steep mountain road is only open during the summer.
- Bring binoculars for the boat trip to spot seals, eagles, and mountain goats along the rocky shores.
- Book car ferry tickets through the fjord well in advance during peak summer, as space is extremely limited.

Water temperature…
Lysefjord, which means 'light fjord', takes its name from the light-colored granite rocks along its sides, polished smooth by ancient glaciers. Stretching 42 kilometers from Oanes to Lysebotn, it is one of Southern Norway's most dramatic natural features. In several places, the cliffs soar over 1,000 meters straight up from the water. The fjord is home not only to Preikestolen but also to Mount Kjerag and its famous Kjeragbolten, a boulder wedged in a mountain crevice. At the end of the fjord lies Lysebotn, reached via a spectacular road with 27 hairpin turns descending from the mountains. Another marvel is Flørli, home to the world's longest wooden staircase with 4,444 steps climbing alongside an old power station pipeline. Lysefjord is a sanctuary for base jumpers, hikers, and kayakers seeking untouched nature away from the main tourist hubs. To appreciate the fjord's full length, a ferry or sightseeing boat from Stavanger or Lauvvik is highly recommended. From the deck, you can spot seals sunbathing on the rocks and numerous waterfalls cascading directly into the sea. The area is part of the Ryfylke region, offering a great blend of maritime beauty and alpine adventure.
