Kristiansten Fortress (Norway)

Weather…

Kristiansten Fortress in Trondheim was built between 1681 and 1685 following the devastating city fire of 1681. Designed by Johan Caspar von Cicignon, the fortification was situated on a hill east of the city to provide a strategic defense against land-based attacks. The fortress is most famous for its role in the Great Northern War in 1718, where it successfully repelled a siege by Swedish forces under General Armfeldt. Over the 19th century, its military significance waned, and it served various purposes, including as a prison and warehouse. During World War II, the fortress was used by Nazi occupiers as an execution site for Norwegian resistance members, a history now commemorated by a memorial on the grounds. Since 2001, the site has been decommissioned as an active military installation and is now a popular historical landmark offering panoramic views of Trondheim and the fjord.
