💡 Tips
- Do not hike alone to find musk oxen. Join a guided safari to maintain a safe distance, as they will charge if they feel threatened.
- The Rauma Railway ride to Åndalsnes is spectacular. Make sure to book tickets well in advance during the summer.
- Visit the Viewpoint Snøhetta architectural pavilion in Hjerkinn (a short drive/bus away). It's a 1.5 km walk from the parking lot.
- The Dovrefjell plateau can be exceptionally windy and cold even in July; pack windproof clothing.

Dombås is situated at an altitude of 650 meters in the upper Gudbrandsdalen valley in Innlandet county. For centuries, it has been a strategic crossroads for travelers between Oslo, Trondheim, and the western fjords. Today, the town is best known as the gateway to the Dovrefjell-Sunndalsfjella National Park. It is the premier location for musk ox safaris, as this is one of the very few places in the world where these ice-age giants roam freely in their natural habitat. For rail enthusiasts, Dombås is the starting point of the Rauma Railway, frequently cited as one of Europe's most beautiful train journeys, winding through the dramatic Romsdalen valley. The town also hosts the Heimevernsmuseet (Home Guard Museum), which chronicles the fierce battles fought in the area during World War II. The town center is well-equipped with services, making it a popular base for outdoor adventurers and road trippers. Winter activities include downhill skiing at Dombås Skiheiser and extensive cross-country trails on the mountain plateau. In summer, hiking and cycling in the national park are the main draws. A short drive away is the famous Viewpoint Snøhetta in Hjerkinn, a world-renowned architectural landmark offering panoramic views of the Snøhetta mountain. Local eateries focus on hearty Norwegian cuisine, often featuring reindeer, elk, and mountain trout.
