Ilinden Monument (North Macedonia)

Weather…

The Ilinden Monument, also known as the Makedonium, is an outstanding example of Brutalist architecture and a primary national symbol of North Macedonia. It was inaugurated in 1974 to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the second session of ASNOM and the 71st anniversary of the Ilinden Uprising. Located on a hilltop in Kruševo, the monument has a wide view of the surrounding region. Its futuristic, circular structure with distinctive window openings and a white exterior resembles an organic shape or a sci-fi spacecraft. Inside, it houses the tomb of Nikola Karev, the President of the Kruševo Republic, as well as beautiful glass mosaics depicting the history of the Macedonian struggle for independence. Designed by Jordan and Iskra Grabuloski, the building is not only a place of remembrance but also a significant work of art embodying the yearning for freedom and a modern future.
