Anam Bay Tidal Flat (North Korea)

Weather…

The Anam Bay Tidal Flat is located in Mundok County on the western coast of North Korea, forming an ecologically highly sensitive coastal ecosystem. These expansive intertidal zones were created by the accumulation of riverine sediments within a shallow bay of the Yellow Sea. The area is internationally recognized as a major stopover for migratory birds and is a core component of the Mundok Migratory Bird Reserve, which is protected under the Ramsar Convention. During low tide, vast stretches of mudflats are exposed, providing a rich foraging ground of invertebrates for thousands of waterfowl. Of particular significance is the presence of the globally endangered black-faced spoonbill and various species of cranes that rest here along the East Asian-Australasian Flyway. Geographically, the tidal flats are characterized by a complex network of tidal channels and adjacent salt marshes. The preservation of these flats is critical not only for wildlife conservation but also for coastal protection and the regulation of regional water quality. In recent years, increased scientific research has been conducted on biomass production and sedimentation dynamics within the bay.
