Kimchaek, formerly known as Songjin, is a major industrial and port city located in North Hamgyong Province on the eastern coast of North Korea. The city was renamed in 1951 to honor General Kim Chaek, a key military figure who died during the Korean War. Geographically situated along the Sea of Japan, it serves as a critical strategic hub for maritime logistics and heavy industry. The skyline is dominated by the massive Kim Chaek Iron and Steel Complex, which is one of the largest metallurgical facilities in the country and a cornerstone of the national economy. Beyond heavy industry, the city is a significant center for the fishing industry, utilizing its coastal location to supply marine products to the northern regions. The urban layout follows traditional socialist planning with wide thoroughfares, public squares, and functional residential blocks integrated with industrial zones. Kimchaek also functions as an essential railway junction, connecting the coastal transport corridor with the mineral-rich interior of the country. Today, it remains a vital site for technological development in the processing of raw materials and heavy manufacturing.
