Mount Chilbo

Mount Chilbo in North Hamgyong Province is often referred to as the 'Mountain of Seven Treasures' as it is said to house seven legendary treasures. It is divided into Inner, Outer, and Sea Chilbo, the latter bordering the East Sea and famous for its bizarre rock formations in the water. The region has a rare combination of mountain scenery and maritime flair. A special feature is the homestay village, where tourists can stay in traditional houses with local families. Nature is characterized by pine forests and volcanic rock forms shaped by erosion into fantastic figures. Culinarilly, Chilbo is famous for its pine mushrooms (Songi), which are considered a delicacy and are often prepared fresh. Hiking leads to hidden temples like the 9th-century Kaesim Temple, which provides a deep insight into Korea's religious architecture. Access is adventurous, usually via Orang Airport followed by a drive through rural areas. The best time to visit is summer for the beach or autumn for the mushroom harvest. Chilbo is considered an under-the-radar destination as it lies far from classical tourist routes, providing a particularly authentic experience of the North Korean landscape and culture.
