💡 Tips
- As a border city with China, security regulations are extremely tight; absolutely do not take photos facing the border river without explicit permission.
- The city's tourism centers almost entirely on the revolutionary history of Kim Jong-suk; expect detailed, mandatory guided tours of her birthplace.
- It is considered respectful to dress neatly (collared shirts, trousers) when visiting the numerous revolutionary monuments here.
- Winters are bitterly cold due to the far northern latitude; pack heavy thermal layers if visiting outside of the summer months.
🍽 Food
The region is famous nationwide for its sweet white apricots. Try them fresh in summer, or as dried fruit and jams year-round.
A fragrant, sweet alcoholic drink made from local apricots. It is often served to tourists at dinner and makes a great toast.
Cuisine in the north is generally hardier; expect hearty tofu stews and simple, filling side dishes at your hotel restaurant.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
The city has a long history of pottery. Check the tourist shops for traditional, practical ceramic bowls and cups.
At the Kim Jong-suk birthplace site, you can purchase translated biographies and histories focusing on the anti-Japanese guerilla struggle.
The park surrounding the traditional thatched-roof home is impeccably maintained and gives a quiet, highly manicured environment for a short walk.

Hoeryong is a city in North Hamgyong province, right on the border with China, separated only by the Tumen River. Its importance stems almost exclusively from its status as the official birthplace of Kim Jong-suk, the first wife of Kim Il-sung and mother of Kim Jong-il. For this reason, the city has become an important place of pilgrimage for North Koreans and is rich in monuments, museums, and 'revolutionary sites' that glorify her life and role in the anti-Japanese movement. Apart from this ideological aspect, Hoeryong is a relatively insignificant city, whose economy is characterized by agriculture and some light industry. It was also the site of an infamous political prison camp (Camp 22), which, however, has reportedly been closed. Its location on the border makes it an important point for legal and illegal exchange with China.
