Kennemer Duinen (Netherlands)

Weather…

The Kennemer Duinen form the core of the Zuid-Kennemerland National Park in the province of North Holland, representing one of the most diverse coastal dune systems in the country. Shaped over centuries by North Sea winds and sand deposition, some of the dunes now reach heights exceeding 30 metres. Historically, the area was vital for the natural extraction and filtration of drinking water for Amsterdam, a practice that shaped the current distribution of its flora. The landscape features a mix of open sand dunes, freshwater lakes, pine forests, and lime-rich scrublands dominated by sea buckthorn. A significant ecological highlight is the Kraansvlak area, where European bison (wisents) were reintroduced in 2007 as part of a natural grazing project. The dunes also provide a habitat for fallow deer, roe deer, and a wide variety of songbirds. Since 1995, the area has been part of the national park, successfully balancing high biodiversity with its role as a recreational area for the nearby urban centres.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
The dune area near Haarlem is typically very well accessible by bicycle or via local public transportation. Several well-marked entrances usually lead directly from the adjacent towns straight into the park.
📅
Best season
A visit is generally appealing year-round, but it is particularly pleasant in late spring or during the summer. On sunny days, the dunes typically also invite visitors for a quick detour to the nearby beach.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The terrain is typically characterized by rolling hills, sandy paths, and well-paved cycling routes. However, walking in the loose sand can sometimes require a certain level of basic physical endurance.
🎒
What to bring
For the unpaved paths, closed shoes are normally the best choice to avoid getting sand inside your footwear. Wind and sun protection are typically essential in the often shadeless and exposed dune landscape.
🅿️
Parking
Paid parking lots are usually available for visitors near the main entrances to the national park. On warm weekends, these parking spaces can typically fill up quite quickly, so early arrival is recommended.
⚠️
Safety
The area is normally safe, but you should be careful not to lose your bearings in the vast network of dunes. Additionally, visitors typically need to make sure they do not enter the protected water collection zones.
⏱️
Time needed
For a relaxing hike or an extended bicycle ride, visitors typically plan to spend between two and five hours. The vast size of the area generally allows for spending an entire day here without running out of paths.
