Zuidlaren is located in the Dutch province of Drenthe and is often cited as one of the region's most beautiful villages. Its 'Green Village' nickname is thanks to its many old trees and generous green spaces. Internationally, Zuidlaren is most famous for the Zuidlaardermarkt, a massive annual horse and goods market that dates back to the 12th century and attracts tens of thousands of visitors every October. This event transforms the otherwise quiet village into a bustling hub of commerce and festivities. Beyond the market, Zuidlaren is surrounded by a memorable natural landscape that is part of the Drentsche Aa National Park. This ancient stream and 'esdorpen' (high ground villages) landscape gives fantastic hiking and cycling opportunities along winding streams and through easy on the eye villages. The village itself is home to several historic buildings and sculptures, including a monument to Lodewijk van Heiden, a navigator who served the Russian Tsar. Culinarily, Zuidlaren has cozy cafes and restaurants to enjoy local specialties. Getting there is easy, as it is conveniently located between the cities of Groningen and Assen, well-connected by car or bus. The best time to visit is autumn to experience the famous market, or summer to fully enjoy the lush natural surroundings.
