Emden is a significant seaport city in northwestern Lower Saxony, strategically located at the mouth of the Ems River where it flows into the North Sea. The city is home to a long maritime history dating back to the 8th century, when it emerged as a prominent Frisian trading post. During the 16th century, Emden became one of the most important centers for Dutch Protestant exiles and flourished economically as a vital hub for maritime trade. A central landmark of the city is the City Hall with its armory, which was faithfully rebuilt after sustaining massive damage during World War II. Today, Emden is primarily known as the site of one of Europe's largest Volkswagen plants and as a major port for automotive shipments. The city is also famous for the Otto-Huus, a museum dedicated to the locally born comedian Otto Waalkes. Its geographic location on the Dollart bay shapes the cityscape with numerous canals and waterways, earning Emden the nickname Venice of the North.
