Bad Nieuweschans is located on the very edge of the German border and is celebrated as the first official spa town in the Netherlands. The village's thermal resort uses mineral-rich water drawn from 600 meters underground, known for its high salt, iodine, and magnesium content. Originally founded as a fortress in 1628 during the Eighty Years' War, the village has meticulously preserved its historical core, including old barracks and officers' quarters. Visitors can stroll along the restored ramparts or visit the Fortress Museum to learn about the village's military past. The surrounding landscape of vast polders is good for peaceful cycling trips that often cross the border into Germany. Bad Nieuweschans features a unique combination of health-focused wellness and rich cultural heritage, making it a first-rate retreat for those seeking tranquility and rejuvenation in the far north-east.
