Delfzijl is a prominent port city in the province of Groningen, situated on the Ems estuary directly across from the German city of Emden. The town originated in the 16th century around a fortification and evolved into a strategic military stronghold due to its coastal position. During the 19th century, the construction of the Ems Canal and the arrival of the railway transformed Delfzijl into a major industrial center. Today, it hosts the third-largest seaport in the Netherlands, which is a critical hub for the chemical industry and aluminum smelting. While the townscape is dominated by maritime and industrial facilities, the recently developed artificial beach and sea promenade provide significant recreational space. Culturally, Delfzijl is famous for 'DelfSail,' a major international tall ships event held periodically. Following a municipal reorganization in 2021, Delfzijl merged into the Eemsdelta municipality, where it continues to serve as the primary urban and economic engine.
