Weener is a small town in the Leer district in East Frisia, situated directly on the western bank of the Ems. It is considered the unofficial capital of the Rheiderland region. The town's history is closely linked to the river and trade, which is still reflected today in the historic Old Harbor, where numerous traditional ships are moored. A cultural gem of European standing is the Organeum, a center for historic keyboard instruments housed in a magnificent neo-Gothic villa. The town's St. George's Church also houses a famous Arp-Schnitger organ from 1710, attracting organists from all over the world. Weener has preserved an independent identity over centuries, strongly shaped by agriculture and later industrial paper production. The flat marshland surrounding the town is convenient for cycling trips on the international Dollard Route. The proximity to the Dutch border and the connection to the Ems make Weener an attractive spot for water sports enthusiasts. Despite modern developments, the town center with its brick houses and cozy cafes exudes a typical East Frisian serenity.
