💡 Tips
- Juist is a car-free island. Plan to walk, cycle, or use the horse-drawn carriages that serve as taxis and buses.
- Book the tide-dependent ferry or flight from Norddeich-Mole well in advance, especially during high season, as spots are limited.
- A guided mudflat walk (Wattwanderung) is a must-do. You'll not only learn about the unique ecosystem but can also safely walk to the neighbouring island of Norderney at low tide.
- The island is 17 km long. Rent a bicycle to explore its quieter ends: the Bill bird paradise to the west and the untouched Kalfamer to the east.
- Look out for the 'Juist-Krimis', a series of crime novels set on the island. It's a fun read you can find in the local bookshops.
🍽 Food
Take part in a traditional tea ceremony in one of the island's cafés. Strong black tea is poured over 'Kluntje' (rock sugar) and finished with a spoon of cream, which is not stirred.
Try the bright orange sea buckthorn berry that grows on the island. Look for sea buckthorn juice, liqueur, jam or cake in farm shops and cafés.
Get a classic fish sandwich from a cutter in the harbour or a small snack stand. A simple but delicious meal, best enjoyed with a view of the sea.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
Browse the small boutiques for unique, island-made jewellery, often featuring amber, or art inspired by the coastal landscape.
Take a piece of the 'Magic Land' home. Look for quality souvenirs like local photo books, posters or clothing that reflect the island's unique flair.
Take a long hike or bike ride to this vast sand spit at the western end. It's a nature reserve, well-suited for birdwatching and feeling like you're at the end of the world during low tide.
The Kalfamer is an untouched nature reserve at the eastern end of the island, accessible only on foot or by bike, offering absolute peace and seclusion.
The 17 km long sandy beach is the island's jewel. Early in the morning or late in the evening, you'll have large parts of it all to yourself.
Water temperature…
Juist, at 17 kilometers long and only 500 meters wide, is the narrowest of the East Frisian islands. It bears the Frisian nickname 'Töwerland,' meaning Magic Land. Time seems to have stood still here: Juist is completely car-free, and unlike other islands, even commercial activities are strictly limited to horse-drawn carriages. Even the mail and garbage collection are horse-powered, creating a unique acoustic backdrop. The endless sandy beach on the north side is considered one of the most beautiful in Germany. Natural highlights include the Hammersee, the largest freshwater lake on a North Sea island, and the Bill Reef in the west, where hundreds of seals often congregate. The island's landmark is the striking maritime daymark at the harbor. In Juist village and the Loog district, visitors will find cozy accommodations and restaurants serving regional delicacies. Arrival is an experience in itself, as the ferry is tide-dependent and often maneuvers through narrow channels in the Wadden Sea.
