Fort Namutoni is a historic fort located within Etosha National Park. It was originally established as a German control post in 1897 for trade and veterinary inspections. The original fort was destroyed in 1904 during the Ovambo Uprising but was later rebuilt between 1905 and 1907. The rebuilt fort that we see today is a distinctive, whitewashed structure, reminiscent of a French Foreign Legion fort. It has served various purposes over the years, including as a police post and a prison. Since 1957, it has been part of Etosha National Park, serving as a rest camp for tourists. Visitors can stay within the fort's walls, climb the tower for views of the surrounding plain and waterhole, and visit the small museum.
