Hoba Meteorite (Namibia)

Weather…

The Hoba Meteorite is the largest known meteorite on Earth, located on the Hoba West farm near Grootfontein. It was discovered by chance in 1920 by a farmer while plowing and has never been moved from its discovery site due to its enormous weight of approximately 60 tons. The meteorite is composed of about 84% iron and 16% nickel, classifying it as an ataxite, a rare class of iron meteorites. It is estimated to have impacted Earth less than 80,000 years ago, though the object itself is approximately 200 to 400 million years old. Despite its size, it left no discernible impact crater, leading scientists to believe it entered the atmosphere at a very shallow angle and was decelerated by air resistance. In 1955, it was declared a National Monument, and today the site is developed for tourism with a small amphitheater and a visitor center.
