Fort Namutoni (Namibia)

Weather…

Fort Namutoni is situated in the eastern part of the Etosha National Park in Namibia and possesses a turbulent military history dating back to the German colonial era at the end of the 19th century. The site was originally established in 1897 as a rinderpest control post before the first permanent brick fort was completed in 1902. A defining moment in the fort's history was the attack by approximately 500 Ovambo warriors in January 1904, which a small garrison of only seven German soldiers managed to heroically repel for several hours. Following its destruction and subsequent reconstruction, the facility served as an internment camp during World War I and fell into disrepair over the following decades. It was not until 1957 that the fort was extensively restored and declared a national monument, after which it was converted into a tourist camp for visitors to the national park. Today, the characteristic white building with its distinctive battlements is a significant historical landmark reflecting the colonial architecture and frontier history of the region.
