Alte Feste (Namibia)

Weather…

Alte Feste (Old Fortress) in Windhoek is the city's oldest surviving building and a significant national monument. Its cornerstone was laid in 1890 by the German Schutztruppe colonial troops under the command of Curt von François. The fort was built to serve as headquarters for the German troops and to impose peace between the warring Nama and Herero tribes. Its strategic location on a hill provided a commanding view of the valley. Alte Feste was extended multiple times over the years and served various purposes, including as barracks and later as a hostel. From 1957 until 2014, it housed the historical collection of the National Museum of Namibia. The controversial Reiterdenkmal equestrian statue, commemorating the German colonial troops, once stood in its courtyard but was removed in 2013. The building is a symbol of Windhoek's beginnings.
