Van Eck Power Station (Namibia)

Weather…

The Van Eck Power Station is a coal-fired thermal power plant located on the northern outskirts of Windhoek. Constructed in the early 1970s, it served for decades as Namibia's primary domestic source of electricity. Named after Dr. Hendrik van Eck, the facility has an installed capacity of approximately 120 megawatts, consisting of four separate 30-megawatt units. Its iconic 103-meter-high chimneys are a prominent feature of the capital's industrial landscape. Recently, the plant underwent an extensive refurbishment program to extend its operational life and improve environmental compliance. As Namibia imports most of its coal from South Africa, Van Eck is currently utilized mainly for peak loading and as a back-up facility to ensure national grid stability during regional supply shortfalls.
