Schwerinsburg is the largest of the three iconic castles in Windhoek, majestically perched on a hill overlooking the city. The original structure was built around 1890 as a lookout tower for the German colonial forces and was later expanded into a romantic medieval-style castle in 1913 by the architect Wilhelm Sander. It was named after Count von Schwerin, who commissioned the transformation and used the castle as his private residence. The architecture features fortified towers, battlements, and massive stone walls reminiscent of European knightly castles. Following World War I, the building served various functions and changed ownership several times. Today, Schwerinsburg serves as the official residence of the Italian Ambassador to Namibia, meaning it is generally not open to the public for interior tours. Nevertheless, it remains a significant architectural monument of the city's history and, along with Heinitzburg and Sanderburg, defines the Windhoek skyline. Its location has commanding views over the capital's center and the surrounding mountains.

Visiting
Schwerinsburg is the largest of Windhoek's three castles and currently serves as a private residence. Interior visits are generally not possible, but the exterior can be admired from public grounds.
Typical hours
As a private residence, there are no fixed opening hours for the public. Occasionally, guided tours or special events may be arranged by appointment.
Photography
Exterior photography from the nearby sidewalk or street is allowed. Interior photography is not possible without an invitation.
Time needed
For viewing the exterior and taking a few photos, about 15 to 30 minutes suffice. If waiting for a guided tour, the stay can be longer.

The castle is located in the Hochland Park suburb; combine the visit with nearby Zoo Park or the Independence Museum. The other castle, Heinitzburg, is also close by.
Getting there
Schwerinsburg is easily reachable by car or taxi from Windhoek city center. Follow Castle Road and park near the intersection with Heinitzburg Street.
