Moatize Coal Mine (Mozambique)

Weather…

The Moatize Coal Mine in Tete Province is one of the world's largest open-cast coal mining operations and a central pillar of Mozambique's mineral sector. The mine holds vast reserves of high-quality coking coal, primarily used in the international steel industry. Originally developed by the Brazilian conglomerate Vale and later acquired by Vulcan Energy, the project has driven a massive transformation of infrastructure in the Tete region. To transport the extracted coal to global markets, extensive investments were made in railway corridors leading to the ports of Beira and Nacala. The mine is a critical economic driver, creating thousands of jobs and providing substantial tax revenue for the government. Despite the global energy transition, Moatize's metallurgical coal remains in high demand due to its superior quality for steel manufacturing. The mining company is increasingly focusing on emission reduction technologies and improved safety protocols to align with modern standards for sustainable mining.
