Lengwe National Park (Malawi)

Weather…

Lengwe National Park is a unique wildlife sanctuary located in the hot, low-lying Shire Valley of southern Malawi. It is most famous for being the northernmost habitat of the elusive Nyala antelope, a beautiful spiral-horned species rarely seen elsewhere in the country. The park's terrain is distinct from Malawi’s higher-altitude reserves, consisting of dense deciduous thickets and dry forests that provide a thick cover for wildlife. Because natural water is scarce, the park features several man-made waterholes with sunken hides, such as the Jalawe hide, allowing visitors to observe animals at eye level without disturbing them. During the dry season, these spots become hubs of activity for buffalos, warthogs, and kudus. Bird enthusiasts will find the park rewarding, with over 300 species recorded, including the rare Boehm's Bee-eater. Originally established as a game reserve in 1928, Lengwe has transformed into a vital conservation area for the Shire Valley’s dry-land ecosystem.

📋 Practical info

🧭
Getting there
Usually accessed via the main road south of Blantyre, leading towards Chikwawa. A sturdy 4x4 vehicle is highly recommended due to the rough, sandy dirt tracks leading to the park gate.
📅
Best season
The dry season, typically from May to October, is generally the best time for wildlife viewing as the arid bush thins out, making the Nyala antelope much easier to spot.
⛰️
Terrain & paths
The landscape primarily features relatively flat but rugged terrain covered in thick thickets and arid savanna. Unpaved dirt roads can be extremely dusty or unexpectedly muddy.
🎒
What to bring
Neutral-colored, breathable clothing, sturdy walking shoes, sun protection, and plenty of drinking water are essential for this hot environment. Binoculars are recommended for wildlife.
🅿️
Parking
Visitors typically leave their vehicles at the main entrance gate or safely parked at designated lodge areas before proceeding on guided game drives or organized nature walks.
⚠️
Safety
Wild animals roam freely throughout the area. Always follow the strict guidance of local rangers, stay in your vehicle where required, and protect yourself against local mosquitoes.
⏱️
Time needed
A typical visit usually lasts between a half-day and a full day, allowing enough time for morning or late afternoon game drives to maximize your chances of wildlife sightings.
