Old Town of Ulcinj (Montenegro)

Weather…

The Old Town of Ulcinj is one of the oldest settlements on the Adriatic coast, boasting over 2,500 years of continuous habitation influenced by Illyrian, Roman, Byzantine, Venetian, and Ottoman civilizations. Perched on a dramatic cliff overlooking the sea, this fortified citadel functioned for centuries as an impregnable stronghold and was a notorious hub for Mediterranean piracy during the 17th and 18th centuries. A popular local legend claims that the celebrated Spanish author Miguel de Cervantes was held captive here as a slave, and that his character Dulcinea was inspired by the town's ancient name, Olcinium. The architectural landscape of the Old Town features a diverse mix of Venetian bastions, Ottoman mosques, and narrow medieval alleys carved directly into the rock. Within its ancient walls lies the historic Slave Square, where captured sailors were once traded, alongside an archaeological museum housing relics from the town’s classical past. Despite suffering significant damage during the 1979 earthquake, the town has been meticulously restored, preserving its evocative atmosphere as a living monument to maritime history.
