💡 Tips
- Mörön is the gateway to Lake Khövsgöl. Stock up on supplies and withdraw cash here, as options are limited at the lake.
- Shared jeeps and minivans to Khatgal leave from the central market area when full.
- Even in summer, nights can be chilly. Bring warm layers, as the northern weather is unpredictable.
- The local provincial museum features good context on the region's flora, fauna, and local reindeer herders.
- A short drive out of town takes you to the Uushigiin Uver deer stones, some of the best-preserved Bronze Age monuments in Mongolia.
🍽 Food
Traditional steamed and fried meat dumplings, widely available in local canteens (guanz) around the market.
Try local dried curds (aaruul) and yogurt sold by herders near the bus stand.
Occasionally found in local eateries, sourced from the nearby lake region.
🛍 Shopping · 🧘 Quiet spots
The central market is the best place to buy warm clothing, riding boots, and camping gear.
Stock up on non-perishable food items before heading into the taiga or the lake area.
A peaceful, rebuilt Buddhist monastery on the edge of town.
A quiet spot for a walk just outside the main urban center.
Water temperature…
Mörön, whose name simply means river in Mongolian, is the capital of Khövsgöl Province. The town lies in a fertile basin along the Delgermörön River at 1,283 metres above sea level and has served as a provincial seat since 1933. Some 38,000 people live here, and the city is the main staging point for travel to Lake Khövsgöl, located 100 kilometres to the north. With a surface of 2,760 square kilometres and a depth of up to 262 metres, that lake holds roughly 70 percent of Mongolia's freshwater reserves. Mörön's small airport runs daily flights to Ulaanbaatar. About 20 kilometres west of town stands the Uushgiin Övör sanctuary with 14 Bronze Age deer stones dated between 1300 and 700 BCE. The wider region is also the homeland of the Tsaatan, the last reindeer-herding people of Asia. Winters here are harsh, often dropping to minus 35 degrees, while summers are short, sunny and pleasant.
