Water temperature…
Sainshand, meaning good waterhole in Mongolian, lies at 938 metres above sea level deep in the Gobi Desert. Since 1942 it has been the capital of Dornogovi (East Gobi) Province, with about 25,000 inhabitants, and it is a major junction on the Trans-Mongolian Railway, roughly midway between Ulaanbaatar (463 km away) and the Chinese border. Some 50 kilometres southeast lies the Khamariin Monastery, founded in 1820 by the Mongolian mystic and poet Danzanravjaa (1803-1856). Destroyed during the Stalinist purges of 1937, it has been progressively rebuilt since the 1990s. Buddhist monks and pilgrims regard it as a spiritual energy centre, and the nearby Shambhala energy circle is visited for meditation and healing rituals. The surrounding country is classic desert landscape with saxaul forests and a rich record of dinosaur fossils. Since 2017 the region has been producing uranium and coal, accelerating Sainshand's economic development.
