Zamyn-Üüd, whose name means gate of the road in Mongolian, lies at 968 metres above sea level in the Gobi Desert directly on the Chinese border. Since 1955 it has been the most important railway border crossing between Mongolia and China. Across the frontier sits the Chinese city of Erlianhot in Inner Mongolia. Zamyn-Üüd has around 14,000 inhabitants and lies 715 kilometres southeast of Ulaanbaatar. Because Mongolian railways use the Russian broad gauge (1,520 mm) while Chinese lines use international standard gauge (1,435 mm), every freight car has to be lifted here onto new bogies, an operation that takes three to four hours per train. Around 400,000 tonnes of freight and roughly 100,000 passengers cross the border every year. A free-trade zone has operated in the town since 2014, complete with duty-free shops, hotels and services for business travellers. The town has become a key logistics hub on the new transcontinental transport corridor.
