Kherlen River (Mongolia)

Weather…

The Kherlen River is one of the most significant waterways in Mongolia, originating on the southern slopes of the Khentii Mountains near the sacred Burkhan Khaldun mountain. Spanning a total length of approximately 1,254 kilometers, with over 1,000 kilometers within Mongolian territory, it flows eastward through the vast steppe regions. The river eventually empties into Lake Hulun in Inner Mongolia, China, although in dry years it may fail to reach the lake. Historically, the Kherlen basin served as the heartland of the Mongol Empire, where Genghis Khan consolidated his power and held his assemblies. The river valley provides fertile grazing lands that have supported nomadic pastoralism for millennia. Ecologically, the river supports a variety of migratory birds and fish species, including the Siberian taimen. Despite its relatively shallow average depth, the Kherlen is crucial for the water supply of eastern Mongolia. In recent decades, climate change and mining activities have led to noticeable fluctuations in its water levels.
