Otgontenger is the highest peak of the Khangai Mountains in central Mongolia, standing at 4,008 meters and representing the only peak in the range with a permanent glacier. It is revered as one of the most sacred mountains in the country and has been designated as a strictly protected area since 1992. The mountain's religious significance is deeply rooted in both Buddhism and Shamanism, often being identified with the deity Vajrapani. Geographically, it serves as a major drainage divide between the Arctic Ocean watershed and the endorheic basins of Central Asia. The flora of the mountain consists of various rare alpine species adapted to the extreme cold and high altitudes. Due to its spiritual status, climbing the main summit is officially prohibited to the public to maintain the site's sanctity. Nevertheless, the surrounding region remains a vital destination for pilgrims and scientists studying Mongolian cultural history and ecology.
