At 4,008 meters, Otgontenger is the highest peak in the Khangai Mountains of Zavkhan Province. It is regarded as one of Mongolia's most sacred mountains, believed to be the home of the protective deity Ochirvaani. Due to its religious significance, climbing to the summit is strictly regulated and often restricted, but the surrounding national park provides spectacular hiking. The mountain is famous for its 'eternal snow' and majestic glaciers that overlook the verdant mountain steppes. The biodiversity around the mountain is exceptional, featuring rare medicinal herbs and endangered wildlife such as the snow leopard. Pilgrims travel here to pray at sacred springs (arshaan) and experience the spiritual energy of the site. The local cuisine of the Zavkhan region is known for its hearty mutton dishes and nourishing soups, which are great for the cool mountain air. The best time to visit is from June to August when the alpine meadows are in full bloom. Reaching the area requires a journey from Uliastai over tracks that demand a capable 4WD and driving experience. Accommodations are available in basic ger camps near the base of the mountain. Otgontenger is a place of reverence, embodying the deep connection between the Mongolian people, their land, and their spiritual beliefs.
