Tsagaan Suvarga (Mongolia)

Weather…

Tsagaan Suvarga, also known as the 'White Stupa,' is one of the most impressive natural wonders in the Gobi Desert. The cliffs, approximately 60 meters high, consist of sedimentary rock layers shaped by erosion over millions of years. From a distance, the vertical rock walls look like the ruins of an ancient city or a monumental stupa. The colors of the cliffs vary depending on the sunlight from bright white to ochre and deep red tones, creating a magical light especially at sunrise and sunset. Geologically, this area was the floor of a vast inland sea millions of years ago. Numerous fossils of shells and marine life that can still be found in the sedimentary layers bear witness to this. Visitors can hike along the edge of the cliffs and enjoy the panoramic view over the endless Gobi plain or descend to the base of the formations to examine the bizarre structures up close. Nearby is the Khevtee Bosoo Cave, known for its interesting rock formations. Access requires a four-wheel-drive vehicle, as Tsagaan Suvarga is located remotely in Dundgovi Province. The best time to visit is spring (May/June) and autumn (September/October) to avoid the extreme summer heat of the Gobi. There is no fixed infrastructure on-site, so travelers usually stay in nearby ger camps. The region is also a good place to experience the nomadic culture of the Gobi inhabitants, known for their resilience and camel breeding. Tsagaan Suvarga features an incomparable visual experience and deep insights into Earth's history.
