Water temperature…
Sharyngol, meaning yellow valley in Mongolian, lies at 850 metres above sea level in the Sharyngol valley about 30 kilometres east of Darkhan in Darkhan-Uul Province. Built in 1965 as a Soviet-style planned settlement for coal mining, the town peaked in the 1980s at around 15,000 inhabitants and now has roughly 8,000. The Sharyngol open-pit mine, with annual output of 2.3 million tonnes of lignite, is one of Mongolia's largest, supplying the thermal power plants of Darkhan and Erdenet as well as households across the north. The coal has a low calorific value of about 3,500 kcal/kg but is cheap to extract. Following the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1990 the town lost roughly half its population. Today Sharyngol struggles with serious environmental issues, particularly coal dust and heavy-metal soil contamination. Local authorities are trying to diversify the economy and improve air quality.
