Xavier High School (Micronesia)

Weather…

Xavier High School, located on the island of Weno in Chuuk, is widely regarded as one of the premier secondary schools in Micronesia. The main building has a remarkable history, as it was originally constructed by the Japanese military during World War II as a fortified radio communications center known as Sapuk. Built with incredibly thick reinforced concrete walls, it was designed to withstand heavy aerial bombardment, which accounts for its distinctive, bunker-like appearance. Following the war, Jesuit missionaries took over the site and established the school in 1952, making it the first high school in the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. Since its inception, Xavier has been a training ground for the nation's elite, counting several presidents and high-ranking officials among its alumni. The school stands on a ridge offering panoramic views of Chuuk Lagoon, serving as a powerful symbol of transformation from a site of wartime conflict to a beacon of academic excellence and leadership for the Federated States of Micronesia.
