Xochicalco (Mexico)

Weather…

Xochicalco, located in the modern state of Morelos, is a fortified city from the Epiclassic period that rose to prominence following the fall of Teotihuacán. Its name translates to 'Place of the House of Flowers' in Nahuatl. The site is strategically positioned atop a hill and is characterized by a sophisticated system of terraces and artificial leveling. The most spectacular structure is the Pyramid of the Feathered Serpent, whose reliefs depict the god Quetzalcoatl and foreign delegations, suggesting extensive cultural contacts. Also unique is the observatory, an underground chamber with a vertical shaft through which sunlight enters with precision during the solstices. Xochicalco was likely a major commercial and religious hub that filled the power vacuum in Central Mexico. Around 900 AD, the city was violently destroyed and abandoned due to social unrest.
