Nezahualcóyotl, often referred to simply as 'Neza,' is a major city in the State of Mexico and part of the Greater Mexico City metropolitan area. Officially established as a municipality in 1963, it was named after the famous poet-king of Texcoco, Nezahualcóyotl (1402-1472). Much of the land was reclaimed from the dried bed of Lake Texcoco, which presented significant urban planning challenges during its development. Nezahualcóyotl is known for its extremely high population density and is considered one of the world's largest suburbs. Despite its rapid and often unplanned urbanization, the city has developed a strong cultural identity, reflected in its lively street art and community-driven social projects. Economically, the city is characterized by small businesses and service sectors. Architectural landmarks include the Cathedral of Our Lady of Help and the monumental statue of Nezahualcóyotl at the city's entrance. The city serves as a crucial residential hub for millions who commute daily to the capital.
