Tula, located in the modern-day state of Hidalgo, was the capital of the Toltec Empire and one of the most influential cities in post-classic Mesoamerica. Known as Tollan in historical sources, the city reached its peak between 850 and 1150 AD following the fall of Teotihuacán. The most famous feature of the site is the Atlantean figures, four massive basalt statues of warriors that once supported the roof of the Temple of Tlahuizcalpantecuhtli. Tula's architecture heavily influenced later cultures such as the Aztecs and shows striking similarities with the Maya city of Chichén Itzá, particularly the Temple of the Warriors. Other significant structures include the Palacio Quemado (Burned Palace) and the Coatepantli, a wall decorated with serpent reliefs. Tula served as a major trade center for obsidian and a religious hub dedicated to the god Quetzalcoatl.
