Grand Bassin (Ganga Talao) (Mauritius)

Weather…

Grand Bassin, also known as Ganga Talao, is a sacred crater lake located in the Savanne district of Mauritius and is considered the most important Hindu pilgrimage site outside India. The lake sits approximately 550 meters above sea level in a remote mountainous area, surrounded by temples and shrines dedicated to various Hindu deities. According to legend, the lake is connected to the holy Ganges River in India, which is why hundreds of thousands of pilgrims walk here annually during the Maha Shivaratri festival. At the entrance to the site stand two monumental statues: Mangal Mahadev (Shiva) and the goddess Durga, both reaching a height of 33 meters. Geologically, it is a maar, a water-filled volcanic basin formed during the island's active volcanic phases. The lake's serene atmosphere is enhanced by the dense cloud forests that often envelop the region. The site remains open to visitors year-round, offering a deep insight into the religious identity of Mauritian society.
