Bassin Blanc is an impressive crater lake of volcanic origin in the southern highlands of Mauritius, located near Bois Chéri. The lake occupies an extinct volcanic crater and is enclosed by steep walls covered with dense, pristine rainforest. Geologically, it stands as evidence of the island's later volcanic phases and functions as a significant natural reservoir. Historically, the area's relative isolation prevented large-scale development, aiding in the preservation of high levels of biodiversity. The forests surrounding the lake are home to several endemic bird species, including the Mauritius Olive White-eye, as well as rare orchid varieties. Access to the lake's edge is restricted by the rugged terrain, which contributes to its quiet and secluded atmosphere. The lake is notably deep, and its waters often take on a dark green hue reflecting the encircling canopy. Bassin Blanc plays a vital role in the local ecosystem and remains a valued destination for naturalists and birdwatchers seeking to experience the original flora of Mauritius.
