La Vanille Nature Park is situated in the south of Mauritius within the valley of Rivière des Anguilles and was established in 1985. Originally conceived as a crocodile farm, the facility has developed into a major nature park focused on the preservation of Mauritian flora and fauna. The park is particularly renowned for its breeding station for Aldabra giant tortoises, which live and roam in a protected natural environment. The dense, jungle-like vegetation of the valley provides a habitat for various reptiles, insects, and small mammals. A scientific highlight of the park is the insectarium, which houses one of the world's largest private collections, curated by Jacques de Spéville over 30 years. The park performs an essential role in environmental education, raising awareness about the ecological challenges facing the island. Geologically, the site is characterized by deep ravines and lush river valleys typical of the southern coastal region.
