Rochester Falls
Rochester Falls is one of the most striking natural landmarks in the southern part of Mauritius. What sets this waterfall apart is the extraordinary geological formation of its rock face: ancient volcanic activity combined with the erosive force of the Savanne River has created perfectly shaped, rectangular basalt columns that resemble organ pipes. The water tumbles from a height of about 10 meters over these tiered structures into a wide pool, sheltered by dense tropical greenery and large, shading trees. The path leading to the falls typically winds through vast sugar cane plantations, providing a quintessentially Mauritian rural experience. It is a popular spot for both locals and travelers, and adventurous cliff jumpers are often seen displaying their skills from the top of the basalt tiers. Despite its fame, the site has retained a rugged and uncommercialized feel, offering a refreshing escape from the tropical heat.
