Vilhena Palace (Malta)

Weather…

The Vilhena Palace, located just inside the main gate of Mdina, is a magnificent example of French Baroque architecture in Malta. Commissioned by Grand Master António Manoel de Vilhena, it was constructed between 1726 and 1728 as part of a major urban renovation of the city. The palace was designed by the French architect Charles François de Mondion and originally served as the administrative seat of the local government and the law courts. It features an impressive central courtyard and a grand facade adorned with the coat of arms of the Grand Master. Throughout its history, the building has served various purposes, including as a temporary military hospital during the British period. Today, it is the home of the National Museum of Natural History, displaying extensive exhibits on Malta's unique geology, flora, and fauna. The palace's grandeur remains a testament to the influence and architectural vision of the Order of St. John during the 18th century.
