Cospicua, also widely known by its Maltese name Bormla, is the largest of the Three Cities located in the Grand Harbour across from Valletta. The town was elevated to city status in 1722 by Grand Master Marc'Antonio Zondadari, who bestowed upon it the title Civitas Cospicua. Historically, Bormla served as a vital maritime hub, housing the dockyards used by the Order of Saint John and later by the British Royal Navy. The city is encircled by two massive sets of fortifications, the Firenzuola Lines and the Cottonera Lines, which showcase the sophisticated military engineering of the 17th and 18th centuries. During World War II, Cospicua suffered extensive damage due to heavy aerial bombardment targeting the nearby naval facilities, leading to a significant post-war reconstruction effort. The urban landscape is dominated by the Collegiate Church of the Immaculate Conception, an edifice dating back to 1584 that remained largely intact despite the widespread devastation surrounding it.
