Marsalforn Salt Pans (Malta)

Weather…

The Marsalforn salt pans stretch for about three kilometers along the north coast of Gozo and represent an impressive testimony to the centuries-old tradition of salt production. These basins carved into the rock, some of which are over 350 years old, have been used since Roman times, with the current system largely dating back to the time of the Knights of St. John. Production occurs through the natural evaporation of seawater under the hot Maltese sun, with the remaining sea salt being harvested by hand. The checkerboard arrangement of the pans against the backdrop of the steep coastal cliffs forms a unique geometric pattern in the landscape. Even today, several local families continue this traditional craft during the summer months between May and September. The extracted salt is known for its purity and richness in minerals and is sold locally in small bags. Geologically, the substrate consists of hard globigerina limestone, which is ideally suited for the creation of such basins.
