Tomb of Askia (Mali)

Weather…

The Tomb of Askia in the city of Gao is a remarkable testament to the power of the Songhai Empire at the end of the 15th century. Built in 1495 by Emperor Askia Mohammad I upon his return from a pilgrimage to Mecca, it is said that the earth and timber used in its construction were brought from Arabia. The pyramid-like structure stands approximately 17 meters tall and is bristling with permanent wooden scaffolding beams used for regular maintenance. The complex includes the central tomb, two flat-roofed mosques, a cemetery, and an open-air assembly ground. This site illustrates the fusion of traditional West African earthen architecture with Islamic influences in the Sahel region. Despite being made of vulnerable materials, the monument has survived for over 500 years through the dedicated efforts of the local population. In 2004, it was recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site for its outstanding cultural significance.
