Tomb of Askia (Mali)

Weather…

The Tomb of Askia in Gao is a monumental testament to the power and prosperity of the Songhai Empire during the late 15th century. It was constructed in 1495 by Askia Mohammad I, the founder of the Askia dynasty, following his return from a pilgrimage to Mecca. The most striking feature of the complex is the 17-meter-high pyramidal mud-brick structure, bristling with protruding wooden beams. These beams function as permanent scaffolding for the regular replastering sessions necessary to preserve the earth-based structure in the harsh Sahelian climate. In addition to the pyramid, the site includes two flat-roofed mosques, a cemetery, and an open assembly ground. The Tomb of Askia was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2004 for its exceptional representation of the fusion between local building traditions and Islamic influences. It remains a vital cultural and religious symbol for the people of Gao and Mali as a whole. Its architecture vividly reflects Gao’s historical status as a major hub of the trans-Saharan trade routes.
