Old Walls of Ségou (Mali)

Weather…

The old walls of Ségou, particularly in the historic district of Sékoro, are the monumental remains of the capital of the Bambara Empire. Founded in the early 18th century by Mamari 'Biton' Coulibaly, Ségou served as the political and military center of one of West Africa's most powerful regional states. The walls were constructed from banco mud and once enclosed the entire palace complex as well as the residential areas of the elite. These fortifications were crucial for defense against rival empires and later against the advancing Toucouleur warriors. The architecture reflects the defensive urban planning of the era, with narrow alleys and massive gates controlling access. Today, many sections of the walls are severely threatened by erosion, yet they remain a central symbol of the former sovereignty and military glory of the Bambara state before it fell to El Hadj Umar Tall in 1861.
